The Community Training Institute offers Garment Construction Training.
Basic Sewing, Design, Pattern-Making, and Tailoring Techniques are taught by Industry Experts.
Community Training Institute:
SoHarlem's committment is to developing a workforce that can be gainfully employed in the garment construction industry. We offer this program to local community residents in need of training and employment.
All applicants must be interviewed and vetted for this program as well as scholarship funding. The training is ideal for individuals with minimal or no training skills in sewing but passionate about learning this trade and eventually, becoming gainfully employed in the garment construction business.
Local residents who successfully complete the training program have the opportunity to become paid Apprentices in the Designers' Studio. SoHarlem also offers Design & Sewing Classes/Workshops for General Public:
These classes are best suited for:
- The sewer: “reading” patterns and understanding pattern pieces, working on
specialized industrial machines and woven and knit fabrics as required.
- The pattern maker: the basic ability to learn draping, flat pattern making and muslin making.
- The designer: the basic ability to go from draping to completing a first sample.
- The novice who is interested in learning to sew as a hobby and learning basic sewing techniques.
