A Busy SoHarlem Collective Is Ready for the New Seasons!

The members of our extended creative community are as active as ever offering everything from instruction on how to sew, use embroidery machine to creating original designs.

Design Apprentice, Mario Miguelito was the recipient of the Dapper Dan, Puma & Complex Magazines Next-Gen Fashion Designer Award

Mario Migeulito presented his Void Asylum line at a March 17 solo fashion show at Samsung 837 in Manhattan’s Meatpacking district. Over 200 attendees experienced Mario’s collection, as well as his new digital art/nft collection.

Mario with Dapper Dan last fall at SoHarlem’s anniversary celebration where the award was announced.

He first came to our Studio in 2021 to sharpen his sewing skills, and became one of the Gucci Changemaker Apprentices. We wish him well as he moves on with his career with the ultimate objective “to inspire individuals to embrace their freedom, seize the day and cultivate their creativity.”

Javier Valencia’s recent creations is this Rose Gold Gown, with Pewter Metallic Stripes on Grey Organza and Burnished Gold Lame, one of a series available for purchase at the Studio.

Our Design Apprentice Noah Ortiz’s ART IN HEAVEN by Noah Josēph repurposed Pony Hair Wool Custom Made Pullover Jacket. It’s one of many examples of how our creative practices at SoHarlem embrace sustainability and recycling.

Finally, Buttons on the Left Holes on the Right (BLHR) is designed by Deirdre Washington one of our first apprentices who recently returned to SoHarlem and serves on our Board of Directors.

Creative Economy Training Institute: The Fundamentals of Sewing

Come to SoHarlem, Learn How to Sew and Meet Prospective Employers

This spring our Institute will be offering another intensive, 12 week session, two days a week, with instruction from Harlem legend and tailor Henry Smith on basic sewing skills to under/unemployed community residents. Our graduates have what it takes to secure jobs in the fashion and garment industries, based on the knowledge and experience they gained at SoHarlem in sewing techniques, including garment construction, and operating industrial machinery. Stipends are provided to all trainees.

Applicants Must Be Authorized To Work In The United States.
